The
Program
This two-day
short course teaches the science and measurement techniques
that are used in the diesgn of tests to support the claims
substantiation process. TRI instructors supplement hands-on
exploration of measurement techniques with laboratory tours
and instrument demonstrations. Renowned guest speakers from
the hair care industry join us to provide insight into the
regulatory process and provide a media perspective.

The
Faculty
Moderator
Dr. Peter Kaplan, Research Director of TRI's personal
care group leads the team into new areas of research, while
fostering TRI's foundations in hair and fiber science. Prior
to TRI, Dr. Kaplan was Director of Measurement Science at
Unilever, where he helped to evolve measurement standards.
Dr. Kaplan received his Ph. D. in Physics from the University
of Pennsylvania, and has expertise in optics, image analysis,
and skin care.
Dr.
Trefor Evans, Principal Scientist, joined TRI one year
ago after fifteen years with Unilever and Helene Curtis. For
most of this time, Dr. Evans served as Development Manager
in the Measurement Science Department where he helped develop
and support claims for a variety of international hair care
brands. Dr. Evans received his Ph. D. in Physical Analytical
Chemistry from the University of Toledo.
Dr.
Ram Ramaprasad, Senior Scientist/Group Leader, graduated
from New York University with a Ph. D. in physical chemistry.
At TRI since 1993, his current research interests include
the optical properties of hair, photodamage, and the investigation
of physical methods to locate site specific damage in hair.
Mr.
Don Harper, Staff Scientist, came to TRI in 2004. His
current research interests include fiber surfaces and the
interaction of fluids with hair fibers. He has extensive experience
in product development, test method development and objective
product evaluation in personal care. Mr. Harper obtained his
M. S. E. in Chemical Engineering/Polymer Science from Princeton
University.
Mr.
Bruce Varner, is the Principal of Varner and Associates,
LLC, a regulatory affairs and issues management consulting
firm. Bruce has over 25 years of regulatory experience, including
government and regulatory management at Maybelline, Schering-Plough,
Helene Curtis, and Unilever. Bruce advised these companies
on regulatory considerations involving manufacturing, as well
as, product formulation, labeling, and packaging and claims.
Dr.
Chris Gummer, Director, Cider Solutions, Ltd.,
opened his own consulting firm in 2006 after 21 years with
Procter & Gamble Beauty Care Research & Development.
His experience ranges from fundamental research, hands-on
development of data and methods, through to copy development
and product credentialing. He has focused on copy claim development
and claim substantiation, plus innovation and ideation techniques
along with identifying external connections for product development
across a broad spectrum of product categories.

Course
Fee
is payable in US funds net of all charges and includes
tuition, course materials, first-night welcome reception,
breakfasts, refreshment breaks, and lunches.
Early
Registration Deadline: February 1, 2009. All payments
must be received by this date.
Multiple
Registration Discount: When two or more attendees
from the same company register at the same time, the course
fee will be reduced.
Cancellation
Policy: Cancellations made on or before February 1,
2009 will receive a refund in the amount of their payment,
minus a $100 administrative fee. Cancellations made after
February 1, 2009 will receive a refund in the amount of their
payment, minus a $200 administrative fee. Registrations can
be transferred to another course date or to another registrant
at no charge.
